10. Free Choice

http://www.channel4.com/

This site is at a peak in modern technology on the web. It replaces the use of looking for different types of media at different web addresses. The site offers a program called 4OD which stands for Channel 4 on demand. Here consumers can watch their favourite channel 4 programes whenever they want to, this is a form of immediacy (4) and vertical integration (13). The site also counts as a news base, offering updated information of celebrities that are associated with channel 4 programs.

The fact that the site is so broken down into different areas of media which can all be viewed in one place offers Non-linear (3) experiences aswell as fragmentation (18) due to people being able to choose diferent things to listen, watch or read.

9. New released Technology

2. RadioStation Website

www.blu-ray.com

The name of the technology derived from the colour of the laser used to read the disks which is a blue/violet colour whereas typical Dvd’s use a red coloured laser. Blu Ray is the next generation of disk formatting which will soon render other forms of data storage obsolete giving it a more global reach (15). Its storage capacity is much larger than a Dvd (2 gigabytes) and holds 25 gigabytes on a single layer disk and 50 on a dual layer disk. Blu-ray displays a Hd (high definition) image when played on a Hd compatible monitor/Television. Blu-ray just recently won selling rights of all dvds over its rival HD:Dvd making it the newest form of disk formatting in this generation. Blu-ray allows backwards formatting along with rewriting capabilities. Due to Blu-rays advanced capabilities they are able to branch into other industries besides film. Playstation three currently sell their games in Blu-ray, which has proven to be a success due to its much higher standard of quality (9). The way that Blu-rays technology, is more relevant to its audiences needs is that it contains more storage space on the same size disk. The blue laser has a shorter wavelength than the red laser, meaning that it can focus in greater detail so more information can be packed together on a disk. The fact that major industries are signing blu-ray to support their products like, Ps3 and Disney films could suggest that they are taking over Dvd.

This product can illustrate an example of Convergence (11) as it can be used as a mass storage device, to watch films or listen to music, using different products to achieve those outcomes. This is a result of an extension of digital technology (20).

8. Example of Convergence

The Iphone is the most typical example of convergence from this generation of technology. It is a phone with built in Mp3, video, internet, camera and video recorder, it is an example of technology becoming more converged (11), miniaturaised (6) and portable (5). It runs with I Tunes and links with the company with Apple.

- It holds up to 16g of on board memory.

- Is only provided on O2 network, vertical integration (13) as it encourages consumer loyalty.

- Allows an emailing and web browsing function, on a fast broadband service (Quad band), which is an example of immediacy (4)

- Touch screen is an example of greater interactivity through technology as it allows the consumer to access functions in new ways.

- Safari internet browsing is another example of vertical integration (13) as it is compatible with the mac. downloading themes and pictures from the web to use as backgrounds allows personalisation (7)

7. Leisure activity involving technology

Play.com

This site in one of the main retailers for modern technology (Based in Jersey). Selling products such as Dvds, music Cd's, computer games, books and other electronics.
It was one of the first online retailers to be established in the UK
The site features all that is expected of an online retailers and more, as it also features video trailers of the product that you are currently looking at. This allows the consumer to see their product in action before deciding to buy, and is what has made Play so successful.
The site is targeted at an audience of about 16+ as the products are based on new modern technology. The kind of people that would use this service would be people who do not have time to go to shops and queue up to buy electronic goods. It is a safer option as it is delivered to your house with free postage and packaging on most items.
They launch an annual occasion where they display their products and hold competitions and using well known icons such as Gemma Atkinson. The wide variety of products show that the site has a very large audience reach (15) and diversification (12) is created as all modern technology is available to buy. This site mainly illustrates interactivity (2) that has been created by the internet development. People are able to browse through products in a completely non-linear(3) fashion meaning the consumer has a more pleasing time when purchasing.

6. Independant Fan Website

This is a fan website for the American football team New York Giants.

Situated in New York, there are many links to things out of the sports genre like locations in New York. The site contains upcoming and current fixtures of the team which fans can find, with locations of events and names of players on the team. Posts are dated which allow viewers to find the more current information. This is more focused towards all general American Football fans as there is information displayed about all types of occasions ralated to American Football.

Concepts of theory:

Interactivity and Non-linear - the fact that information can be found in a table which provides links to further information makes the ssite more interactive and provides a more non-linear experience.

Immediacy - Results and fixtures are updated within the minute that they are announced.

The above point also coincides with Online Surveilance as poeple are always reading and updating the site.

5. Podcast

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/4977678.stm

This podcast is a recorded version of the news shown by BBC available for download to people that may not have been able to watch it. This gives immediacy (4), from the technology. The podcasts brand BBC for what they do and keep viewers to remain loyal to this particular news broadcaster. Each week a selection of podcasts are available to be a downloaded, which each focus on one main topic for example one is focused on "parliament today". Podcasting is a good example of Narrowcasting (17) as people that are interested in other thinks can watch just what they are into.
The audiences from these podcasts seem to mainly be targeted at adults of both genders as they focus more on parliamentary issues. The kind of people that would use this service would be those who do not get home in time from work to watch the news, and can use podcasting as an alternative to finding out the latest information.
The fact that podcasts such as the BBC collection is Time Shifted (8) media means that it can be accessed at any time. This is also an example of democratisation (10) as many people that do not have access to a television can watch the same news broadcasts from the web.

4. Interesting youtube video

http://youtube.com/watch?v=EtkDpYlySRM

Boburnham has become famous from you tube as an independent music artist, reaching more than a million views on some of his most successful songs. He uses wordplay very well in song format and is very popular to his audience. Established companies as well as amateur producers use you tube as it is widely used by many different people. You tube provides a really non-linear (3) viewing due to the diversity of choice available to users.

This is an example of Horizontal networking (14) as he has shared his videos for no obvious commercial gain other than to entertain.

Boburnham has since become seen by many bigger organisations proving that broadcasting on an amateur filming site such as You Tube can increase potential Reach to consumers (15).
The video is targeted at quite a large range of music fans as his work isnt necessarily about the quality of his music but more the wordplay involved with it.
