9. New released Technology

The name of the technology derived from the colour of the laser used to read the disks which is a blue/violet colour whereas typical Dvd’s use a red coloured laser. Blu Ray is the next generation of disk formatting which will soon render other forms of data storage obsolete giving it a more global reach (15). Its storage capacity is much larger than a Dvd (2 gigabytes) and holds 25 gigabytes on a single layer disk and 50 on a dual layer disk. Blu-ray displays a Hd (high definition) image when played on a Hd compatible monitor/Television. Blu-ray just recently won selling rights of all dvds over its rival HD:Dvd making it the newest form of disk formatting in this generation. Blu-ray allows backwards formatting along with rewriting capabilities. Due to Blu-rays advanced capabilities they are able to branch into other industries besides film. Playstation three currently sell their games in Blu-ray, which has proven to be a success due to its much higher standard of quality (9). The way that Blu-rays technology, is more relevant to its audiences needs is that it contains more storage space on the same size disk. The blue laser has a shorter wavelength than the red laser, meaning that it can focus in greater detail so more information can be packed together on a disk. The fact that major industries are signing blu-ray to support their products like, Ps3 and Disney films could suggest that they are taking over Dvd.
This product can illustrate an example of Convergence (11) as it can be used as a mass storage device, to watch films or listen to music, using different products to achieve those outcomes. This is a result of an extension of digital technology (20).
